New York vs Chicago cost of living?

I'm deciding whether to take a job in NYC or Chicago, and the salary is negotiable in both places. Given the significantly higher cost of living in NYC, what salary difference would make the move worthwhile? I'm single, no kids, and my lifestyle is fairly simple -- I enjoy eating out a couple of times a week, going to museums, and occasional travel. Assume I'm looking for a comfortable but not extravagant lifestyle.

Expect to need at least 30% more in NYC to maintain a similar standard of living to Chicago. Housing is the biggest factor; a decent apartment in Manhattan will easily cost twice what you'd pay for a comparable place in a nice Chicago neighborhood. Transportation is also more expensive in NYC, even with the subway. While groceries are slightly higher, the real hit comes from eating out and entertainment. Factor in state and local taxes, which are higher in NY.

Expect to pay significantly more for housing in Manhattan. A comparable 1-bedroom that might cost $2,000-$2,500 in a good Chicago neighborhood could easily be $3,500-$5,000+ in Manhattan, depending on the specific neighborhood and amenities. Groceries will also be noticeably more expensive, maybe 15-20% higher. Utilities might be slightly higher, but that depends on usage. Transportation costs in NYC can be lower if you rely on the subway, while Chicago might require a car depending on your location and job.
