Sydney vs Melbourne cost of living?

I'm relocating for work, and my choices are Sydney and Melbourne. Base salaries are pretty similar, so the actual cost of living is the deciding factor. I'm talking rent (inner city vs. acceptable commute), groceries, transportation, and general entertainment. Childcare costs are also important. What's the real difference? Also, are there any 'hidden' costs that might not be immediately obvious? Which city offers better value for money for a young family?

Sydney's rental market is noticeably more expensive, especially if you're aiming for an inner-city location. Expect to pay a premium compared to Melbourne for similar apartments. Groceries are fairly comparable, though you might find slightly cheaper options at markets in Melbourne. Public transportation is generally good in both cities, but factor in Opal card costs in Sydney and Myki in Melbourne. Childcare is expensive across the board, but anecdotal evidence suggests Sydney is, again, a bit pricier. Hidden costs? Sydney's toll roads can add up if you're commuting. Melbourne has more affordable dining out options, IMO.
AvatarGlobalCareerGuy: Don't forget that Sydney's higher salaries can offset some of those living expenses, depending on your field. Melbourne's culture scene is great, but factor in weather; Sydney wins on sunshine hours.
Avatarbudgetliving: Sydney's rental prices are the real killer; budget accordingly if you're prioritizing location. Melbourne definitely wins on the dining scene.

Sydney generally has a higher cost of living, especially when it comes to housing. Inner-city rentals can be significantly more expensive than Melbourne. Expect to pay a premium. Outer suburbs might offer some relief, but factor in longer commute times and associated transport costs. Groceries are comparable, but some perceive Sydney to be slightly pricier. Public transport in Sydney can add up, especially with Opal card fares; Melbourne's Myki system may offer better value depending on usage. Do a deep dive on realestate.com.au and domain.com.au to compare current rental listings for your specific needs. Also scope out the public transport websites for fare calculators.
