Miami vs Los Angeles cost of living?

I'm weighing job offers in both Miami and Los Angeles, and the salaries are relatively similar. Childcare costs for two kids, housing (renting for now, maybe buying later), transportation (car needed in both cities?), and general day-to-day expenses are my main concerns. A breakdown comparing these would be super helpful.

LA's housing is the major cost driver. Expect significantly higher rent than Miami, even for comparable neighborhoods. Groceries are slightly more expensive in LA, but not dramatically. Transportation is where Miami might surprise you. LA has a more developed public transit system, so you could potentially avoid car ownership, whereas Miami is much more car-dependent, adding to your expenses with insurance, gas, and maintenance. Entertainment costs are similar, but LA offers more free activities. Consider the impact of California state income tax versus Florida's lack of it.

Los Angeles will likely have higher housing costs, especially if you're looking at desirable neighborhoods with good schools. Expect to pay a premium compared to Miami. Childcare costs are also generally higher in LA. Transportation-wise, both cities require a car for most people, so factor in car payments, insurance, and gas. Miami has slightly lower state income taxes (or none, depending), so factor that into your overall budget.
