Los Angeles vs San Diego cost of living?

I'm weighing a job offer in each city, but the salaries are similar. What's the real difference in cost of living if I want to rent a decent 1-bedroom apartment, have a car, and eat out a few times a week?

Expect to pay a premium for housing in Los Angeles. San Diego offers comparable neighborhoods with similar safety and school ratings at a lower price point. For a 3-bedroom, you might save several hundred to over a thousand dollars per month on rent or mortgage in San Diego. Utility costs are fairly similar between the two cities, but property taxes could be slightly higher in some areas of LA, depending on the specific neighborhood and property values. I'd suggest running some numbers on specific properties you find interesting in both cities to get the most accurate comparison.

San Diego is generally less expensive than Los Angeles, but both are pricey. Expect to pay significantly more for rent in LA, especially closer to desirable neighborhoods. Gas prices are usually comparable. Eating out will also likely be more expensive in LA, particularly if you're going to trendy spots.
