Is $150k enough to live in New York?

I'm considering a job offer in Manhattan, making $150k annually. I'm single, no kids, and relatively frugal, but I also want to enjoy the city – eating out occasionally, seeing shows, etc. I'm not expecting to live in luxury, but I also don't want to be constantly stressed about money. Is this salary enough for a decent quality of life, or am I setting myself up for disappointment?

That salary is workable, but location is key. You'll need to aim for rent around $2500-$3000/month to have breathing room. Look at neighborhoods like Astoria, Long Island City (Queens), or even some parts of Brooklyn further from Manhattan. Commuting is a factor, but those areas offer more affordable options. Also, factor in state and city taxes; they will take a significant chunk. Use an online NYC tax calculator to estimate your net income. Finally, control eating out and entertainment budget; these quickly add up. Cook at home a few nights a week.

That salary puts you in a decent spot, but 'comfortable' depends on your lifestyle. Rent in Manhattan will easily be $3000+ for a studio or small one-bedroom. Factor in utilities (around $150-250), transportation ($130 for a monthly MetroCard), and food ($500+, depending on how often you eat out). After taxes, you'll have a good amount left over, but aggressive saving might be tough depending on your spending habits.
