Dallas vs Houston cost of living?

I'm trying to figure out where my dollar stretches further. I know Houston has no state income tax, but Dallas seems to have a slightly lower housing market overall. Considering a move for a job, and trying to weigh the financial pros and cons beyond just the initial salary offered.

Houston's housing market has been surging lately, narrowing any previous cost advantages over Dallas. Factor in transportation costs; Houston's sprawl can lead to higher commuting expenses despite potentially cheaper housing further out. Dallas also has pockets of affordability closer to the city center compared to Houston. Property taxes are also a big factor and can vary greatly by specific neighborhood in each city.

Houston generally has a slightly lower cost of living than Dallas. Housing is probably the biggest factor, with Houston having a bit more inventory and potentially lower prices depending on the specific neighborhoods you're comparing. Property taxes can be a bit of a wash depending on the area and any exemptions you qualify for. Groceries and transportation costs are pretty similar between the two cities. Utilities might be slightly higher in Houston due to the hotter summers and increased AC usage.
