Chicago vs Houston cost of living?

I'm trying to figure out if a job offer in Houston makes financial sense given that I currently live in Chicago. My main concern is housing costs; I'm looking for a 2-bedroom apartment in a relatively safe area, preferably with good public transit access. I'd also like to understand how the overall cost of groceries, transportation, and entertainment compares between the two cities. How much more or less can I expect to pay in Houston?

Houston's overall cost of living is significantly lower than Chicago's. You'll likely find housing much more affordable, even in desirable neighborhoods. Groceries and transportation costs are also generally lower in Houston. However, property taxes can be a factor if you consider buying. Entertainment costs are comparable, maybe slightly lower in Houston depending on your preferences.

Houston's housing costs are noticeably lower, especially if you're looking to buy. However, factor in transportation; Chicago has a much better public transit system, which could offset some of the housing savings in Houston where you'd likely need a car. Property taxes in Texas (Houston) are also something to consider, as they can be quite high. With your salary range, you'll likely be comfortable in either city, but Chicago will probably require more budgeting, particularly for rent or a mortgage in a desirable, walkable area.
