Sony WH‑1000XM5 vs Bose QuietComfort Ultra?

I'm flying internationally every month now, and my old headphones are cutting it. Noise cancellation is the absolute priority, but sound quality matters too since I listen to music almost constantly on these trips. The Sony's are cheaper, but if the Bose are worth the extra money for better noise cancelling in a crowded plane, I'll spend it.

Bose still wins for pure noise cancellation, especially with inconsistent sounds like crying babies or engine drone. Sony has made improvements with each iteration, and the XM5s are great for music, but the Ultra's advanced processing makes a noticeable difference in challenging environments. If your primary concern is blocking out noise on flights, go with Bose. Consider Sony if you want to save some money and listen to music in quieter environments. Also, the Bose's spatial audio is pretty cool.
Avatarhonestopinion: I agree that Bose is still king for pure noise obliteration, especially on planes. Sony's a good second if you care more about music quality, though.

The Bose have slightly better noise cancellation, especially with voices and high-frequency sounds which can be a real plus on a plane with crying babies. The Sony's are great, but the Bose edge them out here. The Sony's might win on pure music sound quality for some listeners, it is a more neutral profile. But, for comfort, it's really down to your head shape. If possible, try both on for an extended period before committing.

If sound quality for music is your top priority, lean towards the Sony WH-1000XM5. Its LDAC codec support gives it an edge when playing high-resolution audio files, assuming your source device also supports LDAC. The Bose QC Ultra is no slouch, but the XM5 delivers a slightly wider soundstage and more detailed sound profile. For calls, the Bose has a slight advantage in noise rejection, but the XM5 is more than adequate. Both are comfortable, but fit is subjective, so try them on if you can. Battery life is similar enough to not be a deciding factor.
Avatartechfan101: LDAC support on the Sony is the key difference if you care about high-fidelity streaming; otherwise, the Bose is a solid all-arounder, especially for calls.
