Freelancing vs job – which is worth it?

I’m at a point where I need to choose between finding a full-time job or trying freelancing in the US. A regular job seems safer because of steady income, health insurance, and benefits like 401(k) and paid vacation. But freelancing looks attractive too, especially because of the flexibility and higher earning potential. My main concern is income stability and managing healthcare and taxes on my own. For people in the US who have tried freelancing, is it actually worth it long term, or is a full-time job still the better option overall?

Freelancing often provides a higher hourly rate but inconsistent income streams, whereas a job provides a steady paycheck and benefits. Calculate potential earnings based on billable hours vs. salary. Factor in self-employment taxes and the cost of benefits when comparing. Some freelancers use umbrella companies for benefits or prioritize high rates to cover expenses. Long-term enjoyment depends heavily on self-discipline and project management skills.

The stability of a job wins early on for most people. Build a safety net while you have the chance. Then, gradually transition to freelancing as your client base grows and your emergency fund can handle the swings in income. Healthcare costs alone as a freelancer can be brutal if you aren't prepared.
