Florida vs California cost of living?

My wife and I are considering relocating, and Florida and California are at the top of our list. We both work remotely, so job markets aren't a huge factor. However, cost of living is definitely a primary concern, especially housing. We're a young couple and aren't picky about the exact location, and are looking for relatively affordable areas with access to outdoor activities and decent internet. How do the overall costs compare, and what are some specific cities or regions in each state where we might find a good balance of affordability and lifestyle?

California's cost of living is significantly higher, driven primarily by housing. Expect to pay substantially more for rent or a mortgage compared to Florida. Groceries, utilities, and transportation are also generally more expensive in California. However, salaries in some sectors are higher in California to compensate. In Florida, consider looking at cities like Jacksonville, Tampa, or Orlando for relative affordability and outdoor access. In California, look into Sacramento or some of the more inland areas of Southern California (Riverside County, for example) for somewhat lower housing costs, but be aware that it will still be more expensive than Florida.

Generally, California's cost of living, particularly housing, is significantly higher than Florida's. Groceries and transportation also tend to be more expensive in California. However, Florida has its own costs, such as higher homeowner's insurance in certain areas due to hurricane risk. Property taxes can also vary greatly by county in both states. A detailed cost-of-living comparison tool (like Numbeo or a similar site) is your best bet for a city-specific breakdown, factoring in your lifestyle and spending habits. Don't forget to consider state income tax; California has it, Florida doesn't.
